Extracurricular Activities

As part of my degree and personal development, I have attended a number of voluntary events in order to better myself and learn about communications in a different environment.

This timeline below highlights some of the key communication activities I have been involved in over the past couple of years.

Meet The Professionals

February 2019

I attended my first 'Meet the Professionals' event in 2019 at Solent University. This networking event began with guest lecturers talking about their experiences in the industry and how they have worked their way up through the ranks to the roles they hold today. This was then followed by a 'speed dating' set up, where you could talk to each professional individually with more specific questions.

The Student Room

April 2019

I was approached in 2019 and asked to represent Solent on 'The Student Room', which is an online chat forum. In March this year, Eloise and I were awarded second place for 'University Representative of the Year' for all the work and help we have offered to people.

I am still a representative on the Student Room over a year later. I really enjoy my work and I'm grateful for all the other opportunities it gives me.

Solent PR

September 2019

In September 2019, I began my role as a Social Media representative for Solent PR. Eloise and I were approached and asked to run the PR blog and social pages, which is a great honour. Eloise took charge of the blog posts and I the Social Media profiles. Take a look at the updated logo I designed to the left to give the pages a fresh feel.

Crisis Simulation

February 2020

My second 'Crisis Simulation was a little more manic, as this time I partook properly under the role of a PR professional. The challenges and messages were of increasing pressure and making sure to meet the deadlines was challenging, but I made sure to delegate roles as soon as possible to make sure we worked as efficiently as possible. Our hard work paid off as we were awarded the winning team for our content.

Bonjoro

March 2020

I was then also approached and asked if I would be willing to further reach out to applicants through 'Bonjoro', where you send video messages to each applicant, welcome them to Solent and ask if they have any questions. Some people reply back to this and then I can produce a follow up email answering their concerns and easing their transition process into Solent University life.

Crisis Simulation

March 2019

For my first 'Crisis Simulation' event I, along with three peers, assumed the roles of the frenzied public on social media and had to make the day even more challenging for the students partaking in the activities. Working backwards from my usual role enabled me to think more like our publics and has helped me consider how others that aren't in the know feel, and what information they would like to receive to feel more at ease.

Clearing Help

August 2019

Eloise and I were approached and asked if we would spend two days over clearing to go into University and help any people who were looking to apply to Solent through clearing on 'The Student Room'. We were also asked to help out a little on 'Bonjoro'. This was a very long and busy day, but it was great to work with such a talented, positive and passionate team.

Meet The Professionals

January 2020

In 2020, I attended my second 'Meet the Professionals' event. This one went even better than the first, as there were no guest lectures, but instead we could circulate the professionals in groups and have relaxed, informed conversations with them. I also had to observe my role as Solent PR's Social Media ambassador, which required asking more specific questions to the professionals for a blog and taking photos we could use and publish after the event.

Facebook Applicants Group

March 2020

Through the work I have done through Solent, and after our nomination on 'The Student Room', I was approached my a member of the admissions team and asked if Eloise and I could become representatives on the 2020 Facebook Applicant Group for Solent. This role is similar to that on 'The Student Room', as we offer advice and support from a students perspective.
